After participating in the war, he also lived in the house at Gartenstrasse 8, where he ran the successful and respected horse and livestock business with his brother Luitpold. Ernst Bermann was married to Clara née Maier (born September 30, 1895 in Malsch). They had three children together: Gerda (born May 18, 21), Rudolf (born July 10, 1922) and Hildegard (born January 6, 1927). The children were raised “German-patriotically”.

Ernst Bermann was initially of the opinion that the German people would not let the Nazis have their way and that nothing could happen to them as a participant in the World War. That was a tragic mistake. After daughter Gerda was banned from attending secondary school and son Rudolf was banned from attending secondary school in 1936, the parents sent the two children to a commercial school in Frankfurt and their son Rudolf to an apprenticeship as a baker in Heilbronn. With the help of one of Luitpold's brothers-in-law, the conditions for entry into the USA were met, so that both emigrated to the USA on June 15, 1938.

For the parents and their little daughter Hildegard, their efforts to leave the country remain unsuccessful.
On the night of November 10, 1938, Ernst Bermann and other Jewish men were deported to the Dachau concentration camp for several weeks. After the pogrom, his wife Klara and their daughter Hildegard fled to their relatives in Holland. After the occupation by German troops, Ernst, Klara and Hildegard were arrested there and deported to the Westerborg camp.

A final sign of life is a postcard owned by Gerda Lautmann, née Bermann. It says: “My dears, package received and thank you very much. Don't send any more. All the best and warm greetings, Ernst and Klara.” The family was then deported from Westerborg to the Sobibor concentration camp. The parents went missing there. Daughter Hildegard was murdered in Sobibor on May 21, 1943.
