John Simpson attended Oxford University, England, where he excelled at both rackets and lawn tennis, representing the university at both sports. In later life he inherited the Simpson Baronetcy, of Bradley Hall, Ryton, in the County Palatine of Durham. He did not marry and this baronetcy became extinct following his death.
