As well being a top lawn tennis player, Humberto Collaço also excelled at horse riding, golf and billiards. He married a cousin of his, Thelma Collaço, who was also a top lawn tennis player and all-round sportsman; they had three sons together. Humberto worked for the pharmaceutical company International Chemical Industries (ICI) for many years. He and his family moved from Shanghai to Hong Kong in 1949 after the communists came to power. After his wife’s death in 1952, he moved with his children to Sao Paulo, Brazil, for twenty years before moving to San Francisco in the early 1970s.
