Charles D'Urban Morris Cole, for many years general attorney for the American Telephone and Telegraph Company in New York, died today at his home here at the age of 81.
Mr. Cole was born in New York, the son of Hanun Wilbur Cole and Abbie Brown Shaw Cole, and was a descendant of early settlers in this country. He was graduated from Harvard in 1883 and received his law degree from Columbia Law School two years later.
He practiced law in New York from 1885 to 1890, becoming associated in the latter year with the A. T. & T. as head of the right-of-way and claim department. He became general attorney in the Nineteen Hundreds, retiring in 1931.
Mr. Cole long had been active in local affairs here and in 1904 was one of five commissioners appointed by the Supreme Court to plan a sewage plant for the town.. He also was an organizer of the Morristown Civic Association; was president of the Morristown Field Club and vice president of the Morristown Y.M.C.A.
A senior warden and vestryman of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Redeemer here for forty-five years, he also was an original member of the Morristown Golf Club. Since his retirement he had traveled widely.
Mr. Cole was married in 1888 to the former Emma Louisa Stearns, who died in 1917. In 1927 he was married to Violet Caroline Ross, who survuves, as do three sons by his first marriage, Joseph S., Charles E., and Hugh L. Cole.
