Blakeman Meyer, Realty Leader Dies in Hospital

Blakeman Quintard Meyer, prominent realestate broker, died last Friday in the United Hospital. He was the head of his own firm in Rye over thrity-five years, and negotiated many of the biggest real estate transactions in this section. He was seventy years old and lived at 135 Wappanocca Avenue.
Aside from his recognized ability in his field, Mr. Meyer was a great organizer and several of the clubs in this area are largely responsible for their existence to his personal initiative. He was instrumental in the purchase of the land for the Green Meadow Country Club, now the Willows Country Club; the Rye Country Club in 1919; now the Ryewood Club; the Milton Point Casino in 1924, now the Shenorock Shore Club and in 1926 the Sea Horse Yacht Club, now also part of Shenorock. In each of these clubs he played a prominent part in organizing and financing their activities.

Mr. Meyer started as a reporter for the New York Evening Journal after leaving Yale University, but three years later left the newspaper to become vice president in charge of sales for the S. Osgood Pell real estate firm. He graduated from Trinity School and at Yale authored the book, " Yale Tales," published in 1902. Mr. Meyer was born in New York City, the son of the late John and Virginia Hoyt Meyer.

Before coming to Westchester, he was vice president of the 2 East 46th Street Company and the Manhattan Center Company and during this time was actively identified with the erection of the first Doctor's Building, later the Carleton and Ritz Chambers.

In 1914, Mr. Meyer organized the Westchester County offices of the real estate firm of Heckecher and De Saulles, which later became the firm of Cushman and Wakefield. Prior to the establishment of the latter firm, he had purchased the Westchester business of the former firm and formed the Wappanocca Realty Company in Rye.

Surviving are his wife, the former May Beaven Cooke of the home address; a son, Blakeman Quintard Meyer Jr., of Bronxville; two daughters, Mrs. Russell F. McDonald of Darien and Mrs. Hamilton J. Whitlock of Morristown, N. J.; a brother, Schuyler M. Meyer of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Percy Weeks of Oyster Bay, L. I. and seven grandchildren.

Largely attended funeral services were held on Monday afternoon at Christ's Church. The Rev. Dr. Wendell Philips, rector, officiated, assisted by the Rev. Daniel Gauclair, assistant rector. Interment was in the family plot in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Tarrytown, with the Rev. Gauclair conducting the committal rites.
