Richard H. Dewing was the son of fellow lawn tennis player Richard Standley Dewing, and the nephew of two other players, Arthur M. Dewing and Maurcie Dewing. Richard H. Dewing was a career soldier in the British Army and served with distinction during both world wars, rising to the rank of Major-General.
