About

The descendant of an ancient family of the Yorkshire aristocracy was born as John Raphael Wentworth Savile.
From 1916 to 1945 he was known as Viscount Pollington. In 1945 he succeeded his father as 7th Earl of Mexborough of Lifford,Viscount Pollington of Ferns
(1766) and 7th Baron Pollington of Longford (1753).Since these titles were created in the Peerage of the Kingdom of Ireland,he was not entitled to a hereditary seat in the House of Lords. He was a wealthy landowner in Yorkshire (about 20.000 acres) and served as Justice of the Peace(1935-1947)
and Deputy Lieutenant (1967) of the North and West Riding of Yorkshire.Tennis seems to have been his favourite sport.
