Ellis McMillan Is Called – Well-Known Saskatoon Athlete, Student, Dies in California

News of the death of Hugh Ellis McMillan, well-known as an amateur athlete in Saskatchewan, and as a brilliant student of entomology, reached Saskatoon this morning. Mr McMillan died Monday at Berkeley, California, where he was engaged in entomological research under a fellowship from the Carnegie Foundation.

Mr McMillan, the son of Mr Derlin H. McMillan and Mrs Etta May McMillan (née Locey), 615 Cumberland Avenue, Saskatoon, was a product of Saskatoon schools. He completed all his public and high school work here, graduating from Nutana Collegiate High School in 1921. He attended the University of Saskatchewan, where he completed his Arts and Science course with high honours in biology. He was 32 years old.

Following his graduation, he entered the service of the Dominion Entomological Laboratory at the university, taking his Master’s degree in biology in 1929. Mr McMillan then specialized in cutworm control and was engaged in this work at Indian Head and later at Lethbridge. From Lethbridge he received a scholarship to attend university at Berkeley. He left last autumn to begin his post graduate course there.

During his years at the University of Saskatchewan, Mr McMillan took a leading part in basketball. He was a member of several championship teams and later coached other teams of undergraduates. He was widely known in tennis circles throughout the province. In 1928, he won the provincial singles title and held it for four consecutive seasons. He was also a member of university tennis teams.

The fellowship which Mr McMillan won was the only one to be bestowed on a Canadian since the inception of it six years ago. It was worth $3,500 a year. In July 1932, Mr McMillan married Miss Edna Wright of Saskatoon. He is survived by his wife; both parents; three sisters: Mrs Annie Tallis, Kelvington, Saskatchewan; Jean, at home; and Mrs Flora Kamann, Saskatoon; and one brother, Ross, of Saskatoon.
