Mr Charles Ryder – Political Service in Sudan

Mr Charles Frederick Ryder. O.B.E., who after a career in the Sudan Political Service was head of the Aliens’ War Service Department at the Home Office during the 1939-45 War. died yesterday in London. Born in 1879 and educated at Charterhouse and Magdalen College, Oxford, Ryder first entered the Sudan Civil Service in 1905 and served as province judge for Berber and the Red Sea Provinces from 1909 to 1915.

After war services for which he was mentioned in dispatches, Ryder joined the Political Service, being appointed assistant Sudan agent in Cairo in 1924 and agent by 1931. In 1925 he married Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Clement Valentine Harman, by whom he had three sons. He was made an O.B.E. in 1919.
