Obituary – Mr Edwin Salmond

The death has occurred at Napier of Mr Edwin Salmond, one of the best-known figures in commercial circles in Wellington for many years. Mr Salmond, who was in his sixty-sixth year, was a son of the late Professor William Salmond, of Otago University, and a brother of the late Mr Justice John Salmond and of Mr James L. Salmond, of Dunedin.

Born in Dunedin, Mr Salmond was educated at the Otago Boys’ High School, and commenced his business career with W. Scoular and Co. in 1893. In 1900 he was appointed accountant on the staff of A.S. Paterson and Co., and after seven years’ service resigned, and, together with Mr P. Spraggon, founded the firm in Wellington of Salmond and Spraggon, manufacturers’ agents. With Mr Salmond as managing director up to the time of his death, this business was so successful that it was soon established in other centres in New Zealand, as well as in Australia.

In 1930 Mr Salmond filled the office of president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the executive of the Associated New Zealand Chambers of Commerce. He was also president of the New Zealand Importers’ Federation. In 1911 he married Miss Jessie M. Reid, only daughter of Mr L.G. Reid, S.M., of Wellington. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, and two sons: Second Lieutenant Graham W. Salmond, who is serving in the artillery overseas, and Flight Lieutenant Ian Salmond, who is in New Zealand with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (R.N.Z.A.F.).

Mr Salmond always took an active part in sport, and was a provincial tennis representative for over 30 years.
