Jerzy Gottschalk was one of the best of the younger Polish players in the years leading up to World War Two, which interrupted his fledgling career. During World War Two he was a member of the Home Army, the main resistance movement in Poland. He was killed in the Warsaw Uprising of late summer/early autumn 1944.
