The first major success was in 1956 when he conquered the Lambertenghi Cup. In 1959 he won the Italian junior title in the single, in double with Luciano Borghi and in the double mixed with Maria Grazia Rossi. Later he obtained two junior team titles with Virtus Bologna and won three bronze medals in the men's double at the Summer Universiadi in 1961 (in Sofia), in 1963 (in Turin) and in 1967 (in Tokyo).
Following him was the nephew Andrea, who in the 90s was for a long time Italian number one and among the best in the world.
An established lawyer in his professional life, Gaudenzi has held managerial positions in the sport, including the chair of the athletic club Faenza tennis.
