Frederick Summerhayes was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Violet Summmerhayes (1878-1974), who won the women’s singles title at the Canadian Championships five times between 1898-1904. They were two of the six children born to William Frank Summerhayes (1849-1936), a solicitor, and Thirza Summerhayes (née Toogood; 1847-1932).
William Summerhayes and Thirza Toogood were both born in England, and married each other in Wimbledon on 16 April 1873. The family emigrated to Canada in 1888, eventually settling in Toronto. Frederick Summerhayes returned to his native England in later life and died in London in May 1965 at the age of 82.
