Charles Porten attended Rugby public school before going up to Cambridge University, where he studied law. He later became a distinguished judge in British India.

Judge of the High Court of Calcutta, 1912; puisne Judge, 1915-21; retired. Knighted, 1922. Settled at Camberley; active on the District Council and Board of Guardians.
