René Mathieu was a publisher, advertising agent and journalist. In 1925, he married Simonne Passemard, who became France’s top female tennis player of the 1930s, and notably won the women’s singles title at the International French Championships in 1938 and 1939. They had two sons together: Jean-Pierre Maurice Henri Mathieu (1927-2009) and Maurice Mathieu (b. 1928).
