John S. Brown served with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War One and took part in the revived Wimbledon tournament of 1919. Having arrived in India on 7 July 1920, he died of a cerebral abscess in the Presidency General Hospital in Calcutta two weeks before what would have been his twenty-sixth birthday. He had started working for the company Ludlow Jute Co. Ltd in Calcutta shortly before his death.
