About

When the first Wimbledon Championships tournament was held, in July 1877, a Henry Thomas W. Wheeler was one of the 22 men who entered the only event advertised – the men’s singles. He also entered the second edition of the same tournament one year later. However, with the exception of a tournament held in in Lisbeg in County Galway, Ireland, in the summer of 1879, he appears not to have taken part in any other lawn tennis tournaments.

When the Census of England and Wales was taken on 2 April 1871, Henry T.W. Wheeler was 31 years old and living as a boarder in a house at 47 Albermarle Street in Mayfair in central London. In the same census it is very difficult to make out the title of the profession listed for him due to the poor handwriting of the person who filled in the census return.

When the Census of England and Wales was taken on 5 April 1891, Henry T.W. Wheeler was a lodger in a house located at 15 Warwick Street, close to Regent Street in central London. He was 51 years old and his profession was listed as “Barrister, Inner Temple/Solicitor”.
