About

John Thornycroft attended Oxford University and later took holy orders; several subsequent sources list him as Reverend John Thornycroft. He married Frances Anne Henrietta Penrose, a native of Glenmore, County Cork, Ireland, in County Cork on 9 August 1883. They had two sons together before John Thornycroft’s untimely death in December 1886 at the age of 30. Both of their sons would be killed in action during World War One. Frances Penrose later remarried and died in 1939 at the age of 89.
