About

The following obituary of Ernest de Sylly Hamilton Browne appeared in The Cheltonian, the magazine of Cheltenham College, in the summer of 1946:

Joghul Browne, as he was familiarly known to many generations of Cheltonian cricketers, who died on April 13 at the age of 90, had been a member of the Council for over 20 years, although for the past three years he had not been able to take a very active part. He was a famous all-round athlete, in the [cricket] XI for five years from 1870-74, and captain of it for three of them, in the Football XX for three years and its captain in 1874, Fives and Rackets Champion, and a leading Irish lawn tennis player for many years.

Nevertheless he was a busy man of affairs. He lived at Londonderry on his own estate and managed a number of others, as well as his own, with great efficiency, till he came to Cheltenham 21 years ago. For fifty years, off and on, he played on one side or the other in the cricket match on Speech Day, and was credited with hits that became legendary. In 1940 he made a generous gift to the Council. His death makes a great break with the past.
