Obituary

Ronald Lewis Sidaway passed away at the age of 87 on February 22, 2000, at Lions Gate Hospital. Predeceased by his wife Bernice (née McLeod). Survived by his daughter Sidney; son-in-law Danny Shmilovitch and four grandchildren: Maya, Gabrielle, Avi and Yael.

Ron was born in England in 1912 and immigrated to Vancouver at the age of three. Following graduation from Vancouver College and while working in Vancouver, he continued his climb up the ladder of competitive tennis. Ron was a member of both the Jericho and Vancouver Lawn Tennis Clubs for many years. As a member of the British Columbia Tennis team, he competed in many matches which took him to Ontario, Quebec and California. He won the Vancouver City Singles Championship in 1938 and narrowly missed being a representative on Canada’s Davis Cup team.

Following his marriage to Bernice on 11 July 1942, Ron enlisted in the army when World War Two broke out and served three years overseas in England and Europe. Following the war, Ron moved to Vancouver Island with Bernice and daughter Sidney. The family made many friends in the communities of Maple Bay, Duncan and Nanaimo and Ron was active in the Cowichan Tennis Club.

Returning to the Mainland in the mid-fifties, Ron and family settled in West Vancouver. Ron joined the Seymour Golf and Country Club and enjoyed the camaraderie of many golfing friends over the years. A loyal supporter of the B.C. Lions from their inception, Ron and friends attended many Lions training camps together.

Ron will be deeply missed for his positive outlook on life, his sense of humour and his excellent company. He leaves behind many, many devoted friends from his working days with Century Sales, his tennis and golf circles, his volunteer work with Kiwanis and his loving family.
