About

Curt von Wessely was one of the top male Austrian tennis players for nearly two decades before World War One. An all-round sportsman, he excelled not only at tennis but also at other sports such as football, ice hockey, skiing and horse-riding. He was also active in the promotion and administration of sport in Austria.

When World War One broke out, von Wessely joined the Austrian Army, in which he reached the rank of cavalry lieutenant. He suffered a serious arm injury while serving in action on the Bessarabian border in 1915. This injury rendered him unfit to serve. The wound in question kept reopening and eventually resulted in the thrombosis which killed him in October 1917 at the age of just 36.

Often played under the pseudonym W.Hartmann.
