Although popularly known as Ted, this player’s first name was Theodore, not Edward. He attended Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio, where he also played on the tennis and basketball teams.
Ted Thompson notably won the men’s singles event at the American Tennis Association (ATA) Championships in 1925 and 1927. He also won the men’s doubles title at the same tournament eight times: in 1917, 1919, 1921, 1922, 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927. All of his doubles titles but one came with his regular partner Tally Holmes; in 1926, Thompson won the title with Eyre Saitch. The last of Ted Thompson’s eleven titles at the ATA Championships came in 1931, when he won the mixed doubles event with Anne Roberts.
