Edward S. Read Dies At Coast

Edward Somerville Read, chartered accountant, prominent in the business and professional life of Winnipeg many years, died Monday night in hospital at Victoria, British Columbia. He had suffered from a heart condition for some time. Mr Read had been associated with the firm of George A. Touche and Company from 1919 until 1929, when he went into semi-retirement and into complete retirement about seven years ago, when he went to reside at Victoria.

Born at Lucknow, Ontario, in 1870, Mr Read was educated at Trinity College, Port Hope, Ontario. He entered the London and Ontario Investment Company in 1887, later becoming associated with their Winnipeg office as accountant. This company merged into Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation, and Mr Read remained with the company until 1906. In that year he became associated with the late T. Harry Webb in the firm of Webb and Read, which later became Webb, Read, Hegan and Company. This firm was amalgamated with the firm of George A. Touche and Company in 1919.

In his professional life Mr Read took an active part in affairs of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Manitoba and also the Dominion Association of Chartered Accountants. He was president of the former body in the years 1923-25 and of the latter in 1927-38.

He was an ardent patron of sport and in his younger days was well known as a tennis champion, having been champion of Manitoba, the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club and Red River Valley. Mr Read was a member of the Manitoba Club and also the Saint Charles Country Club, where he was well known by his prowess as a golfer.

Mr Read is survived by his widow, Owena Read (née Owena Frances Gwendoline Logan), who was a daughter of the late Alexander H. Logan, one of Winnipeg’s pioneering mayors; a son, Harry, Winnipeg; a daughter, Mrs Allan B. Jenkins (née Elizabeth Frances Read), and three grandchildren.
