About

George M. Butterworth was the brother of fellow lawn tennis players Alexander K. Butterworth and Thomas H. Butterworth. They were the three of the eight children – three sons and five daughters – of the Reverend George Butterworth and Frances Maria Butterworth (née Kaye).

In addition to playing lawn tennis, George M. Butterworth was also a rugby player and member of Clifton Rugby Football Club, and a goalkeeper for Swindow Town Football Club. A lawyer by profession, he lived in New Zealand for a number of years in later life before returning to England.
