Sir George Whyte Melville Dundas, 5th Baronet was born on 16 April 1856 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland. He was the son of Sir David Barnet Dundas, 2nd Baronet, and Catherine Margaret Whyte-Melville. He married Matilda Louisa Mary Wilson, daughter of Minden J. Wilson, on 15 April 1879.
He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Bengal Staff Corps. He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Perthshire. He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Dundas, of Beechwood, Midlothian, on 22 November 1908.
