About

Frederick Cope attended Cambridge University and later took holy orders. He was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player George Cope. They were two of the children of John Alexander Mainley Cope (who changed his surname from Pinniger) and Georgiana Catherine Cope (né Garland). Some of the Cope family lived for many years on the Manor House and Drumilly estates in Loughgall, a village in County Armagh, Ireland.

Admitted pensioner, (age 19) at Pembroke, October 13, 1875 [5th son of John Alexander Mainley (Pinniger assumed the surname and arms of Cope by Royal Licence, August 10, 1867), lawyer, of London and Drumilly, County Armagh, Ireland]. Matriculated Michaelmas 1875; B.A. 1879; M.A. 1882. Ordained deacon, 1880; priest (Durham) 1881; Church of Saint Peter’s, Bishop Auckland, Durham1880-3. Church of Saint Paul’s, West Hartlepool, 1883-6; Vicar there, 1887-94. Vicar of Saint Cuthbert’s, Gateshead, 1894-9. Vicar of Saint Ignatius, Sunderland, 1899-1910. Commissary for the Bishop of the Falkland Islands, 1906-10. Honorary Canon of Durham, 1909-10. A member of Gateshead School Board, and afterwards of the Sunderland School Board. Died unmarried in October 1910, aged 53. Buried at Sunderland.
