William H.G. Eyre was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player John Eyre. They were two of the ten children of John Eyre, senior, and Eleanor Maria Eyre (née Moore). The Eyre family originally came over to Ireland from England in the time of Oliver Cromwell. The family lived for many years in Eyrecourt Castle in the village of Eyrecourt in County Galway. The castle is now a ruin.
