Famous Princeton Athlete is Buried:
Alexander Moffat, Pride of Old Nassau in the Early Eighties, Laid to rest in college town. Princeton Feb 26 - Alexander Moffat one of Princeton's most famous athletes of the early eighties, was buried here yesterday afternoon in Witherspoon Cemetery. He died suddenly from an attack of Pneumonia at the Presbyterian Hosptial in New york, Monday. The funeral service was held in New York, adn the body brought to its old home for burial. He was 51 years of age adn a widower. Probably no man in the country was better known as an all round athlete than "Alec" Moffat as he was familiarly known. He was both pitcher on the arsity nine and half back on the eleven and in both sports he was a star. Born in Princeton, the son of Prof. James C Moffat of the Princeton Theological Seminary, and brough up in a college atmosphere, he took to athletics as a duck takes to water. As a boy he was always kicking a football adn he developed the unusual knack of kicking it equally well with either foot. Throughout his colelge course he was regarded as a phenomenal player, both on the nince an the eleven, and in the Princeton Harvard game here in 1883, when he was captial of Princeton's team, with Harvard ahead at the end fo the first half, Moffat began bombasrding the Harvard goal and when the game was over he had kicked no less than four goals from the field, giving Princeton the victory by 26 to 7. All of these goals were from difficult angles and one of them from nearly the middle of the field, He kicked two with the right foot and two with the left foot. This record of four goals in one game with both feet still stands. After graduation, Mr moffat went in for tennis and became one of the best players in the country, and later when he turned his attention to golf, he also excelled in that sport. For many years, he returned to Princeton to assist in the coaching od the football team and was particuarly successful in developing players in his specialty of kicking. Mr Moffatwas graduated in 1884 adn for tenyears worked for the westinghouse company, after which he went into the general contracting business in New York. At the time of his death he was president of the Moffat Watson Contracting Company. His brothers also Princeton graduates are Dr Henry Moffat of Yonkers NY adn William D Moffat president of Moffat, Yard and company publishers NY. His sister is the wife of Robert S Yard, editor of the Century Magazine. The death of Mr Moffat came as a great shock to a wide circle fo friends, who regret the passing of a warmhearted companion as well as one of the most famous athletes of the collegiate world.
