Moved to live at Edinburgh, Scotland circa 1860 when his father was posted there. After his father's death in 1862, when he was 4 years old, he moved, with his mother, to live with his Uncle in Norhill, Befordshire, England.

Educated at Barham Ho, St Mary Castle 3C -Sussex and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Succeeded to The Lodge, Norhill, Upper Caldecote, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, in 1879, on the death of his uncle.

Married Annie Frances Lindsell, 4 Oct 1883, Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, England, United Kingdom.
