Born in Bristol, he was educated at Bristol Grammar School and Christ's College, Cambridge, graduating BA in 1874 and MA in 1877. He was ordained a deacon in 1875 and as a priest in 1877. From 1874-77 he was a school master in Windsor.

He held curacies in Berkshire and Cornwall from 1877-86. In 1886 he came to London as curate of of St Mildred with St Augustine, Lee. He was appointed vicar of of St Augustine, Grove Park from 1892-1902.

In October 1889 he became a member of the London School Board as one of the representatives of Greenwich. He was re-elected twice, remaining a member of the board until 1897.

In 1902 left London, becoming Vicar of St Austell, Cornwall. He retired in 1910 and returned to live in London. He died at his home in Teddington, aged 76.
