About

Alfred Sassoon was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Frederick M. Sassoon. They came from a wealthy family of Sephardic Jews, some of whom eventually settled in England. Although he attended Oxford University, Alfred Sassoon did not really require a degree due to his family’s great wealth. In 1884, he married Theresa Georgina Thornycroft; because she was a gentile, he was disowned by most of his family.

Alfred and Theresa Sassoon had three sons together, including Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967), who later became a renowned poet and memoirist. However, their marriage did not work out and they separated when their children were still very young. Alfred Sassoon died of tuberculosis in April 1895 at the age of only 34.
