Enlisted, 1898, in Troop 3, Squadron A, NYNG, New York City. He served in Squadron A during the Spanish American War era. In August 1900 he saw field service with Troop 3, Squadron A during the Croton Dam Strike. He took part as a member of Squadron A in the inauguration of President McKinley and personal escort to Vice President T. Roosevelt, March 4, 1901, Washington, DC. March 3-5, 1905, as a member of Squadron A took part in the inauguration of President T. Roosevelt, Washington, DC. He was discharged from Squadron A in 1910.

World War 1, appointed Captain, Air Service ( Aeronautical Division ), March 4, 1918. Assigned to Camp Dick, Texas, serving as Officer in Charge of Gunnery; Executive Officer School Dept. ; Chief Instructor. Discharged from the service June 1, 1919.

Career, lawyer / engineer

In 1911 he founded the Herrick Engine Co. to market and research balanced rotary engines. In 1930 he formed the Vertoplane Development Corp., and developed the concept of the convertible aircraft, which could operate both as a fixed-wing airplane and as a giroplane. He changed the name, post WW 2 to Converoplane and stayed active till his death.
