Lieutenant-Colonel Robert H.S. Truell served with the 53rd Regiment in the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including the action at Khujwah, the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, the Battle of Cawnpore on 6th December and the pursuit of the Gwalior Contingent to Serai Ghat, the action at Khodagunge and entry into Futtehghur, the action at Shumshabad, the storming and capture of Meangunge, the siege and capture of Lucknow, the action at Koorsie, the passage of the Goomtee and occupation of Sultanpore, the passage of the Gogra at Fyzabad on 25th November, the action at Toolsepore, and minor actions.

He was appointed Staff Officer to a Column on the Nepal Frontier (mentioned in despatches; medal with two clasps). He served with the 1st Battalion of the Shropshire Light Infantry in the Egyptian war of 1882, commanding it from the 1st September, and was present at the surrender of Kafr El Dawwar and Damietta (medal and Khedive’s Star).
