Colonel Arthur Robert Austen was born in 1860, he was the son of the Rev. George Austen of Havant. He was educated at Marlborough College. Second Lieutenant 22.1.1881; Lieutenant 1.7.1881; Served at the Defence of Alexandria, occupation of Kafr Dowar and surrender of Damietta. Served with the Camel Corps and was wounded at Suakin; Captain 6.12.1889; Major 16.11.1898; Served in Command of 2nd S.L.I. 15.2.1901 to 15.5.1901. Lieutenant Colonel 29.11.1900. Re-employed as Colonel of Records 1914-1920.
