About

Chairman of the Netherlands Olympic Comitee from September 11, 1912 to February 13, 1924.
Member of the IOC from February 1898 to February 13, 1924.

Frederik Willem Christiaan Hendrik baron Van Tuyll van Serooskerken was a nobleman with a particularly progressive social (sports) heart. Whether human or animal, the baron took care of every disadvantaged creature. In addition, he was a pioneer in the field of physical exercise. He is one of the patriarchs of the NOC.

His social commitment ranged from the draft dog, who often lived in miserable conditions, to refugees who crossed the Dutch border penniless during the First World War. However, Van Tuyll has mainly established his name through his efforts to put sport and physical exercise on the map in the Netherlands.

Noble sports
As a sportsman, the baron himself participated in 'noble' sports, such as horse riding, golf, shooting and sailing. In 1898 Van Tuyll was the first Dutchman to be appointed to the International Olympic Committee. He became good friends with another baron, Pierre de Coubertin, the spiritual father of the modern Olympic Games. Partly under his influence, van Tuyll developed over the years into one of the founders of modern sport in the Netherlands.
