About

Thomas was born in the fourth quarter of 1849. He is the third son of John Nash and Susanna Dodd. He was born in Langley, Buckinghamshire.

The 1851 census shows the family resident in Langley Marish, Buckinghamshire, where Thomas' father is recorded as having a farm of 577 acres and 44 labourers. There are three sons at this time - John (3), William (2) and Thomas (1). There are four servants recorded.

In the 1861 census the family are still in Langley Marish and their home is The Rectory. "The Rectory at Langley Marish was the home of the lay rector and owner of the tithes" [1]. The family has expanded greatly with nine children now recorded during the census - six sons and three daughters. The farm has reduced to 340 acres with 21 men and 7 boys being employed. There are five servants recorded in the household.

In 1871 the census records for Langley show William's family in George Green village/hamlet in the parish of Langley, Buckinghamshire. This may be the same residence as in the previous censuses. A tenth child, aged one, has been added to the family although only five are at the family home at the census. Thomas is not present. His father is recorded as landowner/farmer of 340 acres employing 20(?) men and 7 boys. There are 5 servants.

Instead Thomas (21) in 1871 is found in Kensington, London recorded as a visitor - along with his older brother William (22) - to Frederick William Dry (37), "Commercial Clerk", in Argyll Terrace. Thomas is an "Undergraduate at Lincoln College, Oxford" and William is described as a "Student of Law".

Thomas matriculated at Lincoln College, Oxford University in 1867 when aged 17 and gained his BA in 1871. He was called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn in 1874.

In 1875 Thomas's mother died.

In 1881 Thomas (31) is back at home in Langley, where his father, now widowed, is still farming. The home is again referred to as "rectory" (see 1861 above). Six unmarried adult children, William (Barrister), Thomas (Barrister), Frank (Ship Broker), Zachary (learning farming), Susan, Edith, are in the household as is one married daughter, Margaret, and her husband Richard Helder. There are 3 servants. The farm is still 340 acres and employs 19 men and 3 boys.

Thomas married Augusta Parker, born Bethell, most likely in the third quarter of 1890 in the registration district of Thingoe, Suffolk. Augusta was eleven years his senior. She was a widow apparently without children. Her husband Henry Charles Adamson Parker died in 1882, aged 49. He had been an underwriter and the son of a Queen's Counsel. Augusta was on of eight children of Richard and Ethel Bethell. Richard Bethell was also a Queen's Counsel, who was granted 1st Baron Westbury (of Westbury in Wiltshire) and served as Lord Chancellor from 1861-1865

In the 1891 census the couple are resident at 5 Victoria Buildings, Weston Super Mare, Somerset. There is also one "ladiesmaid domestic" in the household. Thomas is noted to be a "Barrister at law".

In 1900 his father died.

The 1901 census finds Thomas (51) at 60 Elm Park Gardens, Chelsea, London, still a "Barrister at law". The couple have four servants resident in the household on the census date.

In 1911 the couple are at the same residence in Chelsea. Three servants are present. The census shows the residence was substantial, having 15 rooms.

Thomas Arthur Nash died on 20 August 1921. He was still residing at the Chelsea address. Probate was granted to his older brother William Harry Nash, barrister.
