About

began his distinguished library career while a student at Brown University. After graduation in 1899 he was appointed librarian of the Rhode Island Historical Society and in 1908 he left that position to accept the offer of the librarian's post at the American Antiquarian Society. He was named director of the Society in 1930 and was made its president in 1955. He resigned fifty-one years after he began working in Worcester. Brigham was a dedicated librarian and bibliographer, and many important collections at AAS are almost entirely his gathering. In addition to his efforts as a collector, he produced, after 35 years of research, a valuable history and bibliography of American newspapers, 1690-1820. He also published Paul Revere's Engravings (1954) and a memoir of his work at AAS entitled Fifty Years of Collecting Americana (1958).
