About

Tom Campion, as he was popularly known, was the son of William Bennett Campion (1813-1907), a native of County Cork and later a King’s Counsel (K.C.), Serjeant-at-Law and Professor of English Law at Queen’s College, Galway; and Martha Campion (née Wilson; 1828-72), who was also from County Cork. They married each other in Killaspugmillane, County Cork, on 15 June 1858. In addition to Tom, they had two daughters, Susan Martha (later Mrs Mulcahy-Morgan; 1860-1921) and Martha Bridie (1869-1951).

In 1885, Tom Campion won the men’s singles title at the Dublin University Championships; he was a medical student at the same university, Trinity College, Dublin, at that time. He continued to play lawn tennis competitively for a few years after graduating, his last year of competition being 1889.

According to his entry in the United Kingdom and Ireland Medical Directories, Tom Campion became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (L.R.C.P.I.) and Licentiate in Medicine (L.M.) in 1887; and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (L.R.C.S.I.) in 1882 (Trinity College, Dublin); a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Medicine; and a Member of the British Medical Association. He was later surgeon on the Orient Line, Pacific S.N. Co., and Allan Line R.M. S.S.

Tom Campion married Jane Irene Lambert Tymons (1862-1909), a native of Dublin, on 2 December 1889 in Saint Matthias’s Church in Hatch Street near the centre of Dublin. The marriage produced no children. Dr Tom Campion died in the town of Celbridge, County Kildare, in November 1907 at the age of 47.
