William Tatem Tilden III was the son of fellow tennis player Herbert M. Tilden and Hazel Antoinette Tilden (née Megargee), and the nephew of his namesake, William Tatem Tilden II, winner of 23 major titles and the dominant force in men’s tennis in the United States for most of the 1920s.
