About

From The San Francisco Examiner, 4 July 1986:

Deaths – John Murio Sr.

John Murio Sr., a nine-time city tennis champion, died Tuesday in his San Francisco home after a brief illness. He would have been 85 today. Mr Murio was one of the best-known national and international tennis stars of the late 1920s and the 1930s, and beat such greats as Bobby Riggs and Don Budge.

Mr Murio held numerous amateur titles besides the San Francisco crown – including the Canadian International National, Pacific Northwest, Oregon and Washington States crowns – and is in the Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame.

Mr Murio’s family noted last night that he played when there was no prize money. Often he told relatives that his contemporaries, playing for free, were more intense and enjoyed the game more than today’s high-paid players. For 44 years he owned Murio’s Trophy Room, a bar on Haight Street near the tennis courts in Golden Gate Park. Before that he owned a sporting goods store on Haight.

Mr Murio is survived by his wife, Marion, two sons, John Jr., of Wenatchee, Washington, and Robert, the tennis professional at Golden Gate Park; a daughter, Lani Tyesky, of Rohnert Park; and five grandchildren.
