Enlisted, October 17, 1914, in Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, in New York City. Served with Troop B, Squadron A Cavalry, on the Mexican border, June 30 - December 28. 1916.

Entered the World War with Squadron A Cavalry then attended Officers Training Corps, at Plattsbugh, NY. Commissioned, Aug. 16, 1917, Captain, Field Artillery. and assigned to the 305th Field Artillery, 77th Division. He saw combat in France ( Oise- Aisne, Lorraine, Champagne, Meuse- Argonne ), and promoted to Major, Feb. 23, 1919, 305th Field Artillery.
September 7, 1918, gassed during the Oise-Aisne offensive. Returned from France, April 29, 1919. Discharged from the Army May 12, 1919.
