Enlisted, November 10, 1911, in Troop 2, Squadron A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City.

December 6, 1911, Squadron A was review by Honorable Henry L. Stimson, Secretary of War.
May 26, 1912, Squadron A was visited by President William H Taft in camp at Van Cortlandt Park.
March 1-4, 1913, he was part of the escort to the Governor of New York at the inaugural ceremonies of President W. Wilson.

He was discharged from Squadron A Cavalry June 21, 1915. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Infantry, July 27, 1917, and assigned to Company K, 12th Infantry Regiment, NYNG.

World War 1, mustered in for service with Company E, 12th NY Infantry, August 2, 1917. He was transferred, October 22, 1917, at Camp Wadsworth, SC, to the 108th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, February 26, 1918 and Captain March 21, 1918. He was transferred, January 7, 1918, to the Construction Division US Army, Washington, DC. Discharged from the service March 1, 1919.
