He was born to Henry Pratt McKean, Sr. and Marian McKean (born Shaw).
McKean graduated from Harvard in 1913, where he played baseball.
He was well-known as a horseman and polo player and also for his introduction of Afghan hounds into this country. His Pride's Hill Kennels had figured in scores of dog shows with notable success.
He worked as a banker.
