About

Melville Long was the brother of fellow lawn tennis player Herbert E. Long. They were two of the children of Dr Seely Frederick Long, a Canadian-born physician, and Sarah Ella Long (née Lagrange), who was a native of Iowa.

Both Melville and Herbert Long studied medicine at the University of California at Berkeley, which they also represented at ‘Varsity lawn tennis. Like their father before them, Melville and Herbert Long both became medical doctors. While still a lawn tennis player, Melville Long notably won the men’s singles title at the Pacific Coast Championships tournament three times: in 1906, 1908 and 1910.
