Sewall Cutler Obituary

Cutler, Sewall Cameron Sept. 4, 1917 - Sept. 21, 2010 Born: New London, CT. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Midge Cutler. Survived by his children, Anna Cameron of Adelaide, South Australia, Julia Cunningham and Laura Cutler, both of Dallas, Texas, Sewall Cameron Cutler, Jr., and his wife Celia, also of Dallas, Texas; and by his grandchildren, Jasmin Morley, Chris Cameron Morley, Thomas Cutler and Carolyn Cunningham. Sewall grew up in New York City, where he attended the Horace Mann School and Richmond Hills High School. He graduated from Yale University in 1941. While at Yale, he captained the Yale Tennis Team. Tennis remained a life-long interest and he continued to play the game well into his eighties. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Navy, serving both in the U.S. and the Pacific during the Second World War. He served aboard the Naval Vessels SPC-13 and the Gold Star and achieved the rank of Lieutenant prior to discharge. Following the war, Sewall moved to Dallas to work with the Liberty Broadcasting System. He married Avalon "Midge" Scarborough in 1950. From 1952 until late 1954, they lived in Paris while Sewall worked throughout Europe for the U.S. government to help enact the Marshall Plan. Returning to Dallas in 1955, he embarked upon a life-long career in commercial real estate, closing his last deal in 2008. Always civic-minded, Sewall served in numerous volunteer capacities, including working on behalf of the Boy Scouts of America, the City of Dallas' Board of Adjustment, the Dallas Daycare Association, the downtown Dallas YMCA, Dallas Repertory Theatre and the Friends of the Forest Green Library. Sewall was always quick with a silly pun, words of encouragement, and with a helping hand for those in need.
