Nose and Throat Specialist dies

Dr Richard Ernest Shuter, former ear, nose and throat specialist, died at a private hospital in Melbourne on Friday at the age of 76. Educated at Melbourne Grammar School and the University of Melbourne, the late Dr Shuter graduated in 1885 and took his M.D. degree in 1902. He practised at Port Augusta (S.A.) and later returned to Melbourne, where for many years he was an honorary member of the medical staff of the Eye and Ear Hospital.

In the last war he served from 1915 to 1917, holding the rank of major. He was O.C. Australian Hospitals at Harefield and Southall, and later aural specialist to the AIP Administrative Headquarters in London. Dr Shuter was Victorian champion tennis player in 1889. He was president' -of- the Old Melburnians in 1925 and a member of the school council from 1925 until recently.

On his retirement about 20 years ago he went to live at Beaumaris and became president of the committee of the Convalescent Home for Men. He has left a widow and a daughter. His only son died some years ago.
