In the early 60′s, Lenny won the ATA National Boys Singles and Doubles Championships. In 1964 and in 1965, Lenny and Luis Glass won the ATA Men’s Doubles Championship. Also in 1964, he won the USLTA Easter Boy’s 14 singles title at Forest Hills defeating Dick Stockton in the finals. At the age of 15, Lenny became the youngest male to ever compete in the US National Championships at Forest Hills. Attending Cheshire Academy on a tennis scholarship, Lenny played No.1 singles and was the first person inducted into their Athletic Hall of Fame. While at Eastern Tennessee State University, Lenny played No.1 singles for three years and was ranked No.1 in the Ohio Valley conference for three consecutive years. As a collegian, he advanced to the quarterfinals three times. He and Hall of Famer Bonnie Logan won the ATA National Mixed Doubles four consecutive times from 1967-1970.
In 1974, Lenny became the first African American to play World Team tennis, signing with the Detroit Loves. He was inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame in 2012 and the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame in 2013. Lenny’s not-for-profit program currently serves more than 200 children per week in the Wilmington, North Carolina community.
Lendward went on to be elected into the USTA Southern Tennis Hall of Fame on January 29, 2011.
