Charles Cresson was a career military man, serving in the Army from 1917 until his death. Prior to that his career had been in law, and he was an assistant US district attorney. He graduated from Seely Academy, Princeton, and Columbia Law School. Cresson achieved the rank of colonel in the Army. He was buried in Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.
