Architect’s death

Late Mr R.D. Harman tennis player and coach (special to The Sun)

Christchurch, Tuesday. One of the most prominent architects of the Dominion, Richard Dacre Harman, died at his residence in Lower Riccarton yesterday afternoon. The eldest son of the late Mr Richard James Strachan Harman, he was born in Christchurch and educated at Christ’s College. He was articled by the late Mr William Barnett Armson, founder of the firm of Armson, Collins and Harman. On the death of the founder, Mr John J. Collins and Mr Harman carried on the business and were responsible for the erection of some of the finest buildings in the Dominion.

Always a keen tennis player, Mr Harman did much to encourage the sport in New Zealand and was one of the founders of the game in Canterbury. He began tennis in the old Cranmer Square Club and won the club championship for many years. He was also a foundation member of the United Club, and, partnered by Mr Frederick Wilding, senr., won the doubles championship of New Zealand five times.

Although he did not take an active part in the administration of the game in Canterbury, Mr Harman was always recognised as one of the finest players and coaches in the province. Many of the foremost players of to-day learned the game under his care. Mr Harman was keenly interested in all forms of outdoor sport and was also a cricketer and a fisherman. He is survived by a widow.
