Obituary – Mr Cecil Bertram Saint John

The death occurred yesterday morning of Mr Cecil B. Saint John, one of Queensland’s leading sportsmen. For many years the late Mr Saint John was the state’s outstanding tennis player, having an undefeated record in the metropolitan area for 14 years. He held several state championship titles, the first of which was won in 1908, and in 1923 also won the Australian doubles championship (partnered with Pat O’Hara Wood). At one time he was secretary of the Queensland Lawn Tennis Association, and until recently he was the official coach of the parent body.

Before his rise to fame at tennis Mr Saint John was a keen footballer, cricketer and chess player, having represented the state at Rugby Union. The late Mr Saint John had only one arm, but despite this fact he could handle a football with great skill, and serve a fairly fast ball at tennis, although the strength of his game at tennis lay in his volleying and driving. Old enthusiasts will remember his many stirring encounters at Milton with Horace Rice, the former Davis Cup player.
